Carroll Counts!

September 23, 2009

Did you know…?

Did you know that as a student at John Carroll University and a resident of University Heights you are able to vote in the local election?
Did you know that JCU is the city’s largest employer and we contribute $1.9 million per year to the University Heights budget.
Did you know that JCU currently needs to seek approval from the city for any additional events we host in Shula stadium?
Did you know that there is a city imposed limit to the number of night games JCU can have in Shula stadium?
Did you know that the city currently mandates that outdoor events at Carroll must finish at an “early” hour or move indoors?
Did you know only less than 2,500 people voted in the last local University Heights election?

Your John Carroll experience is impacted by the decisions made in University Heights! Don’t you want to have a say in determining who will be the next mayor?

If you live in University Heights (on or off campus) you are eligible to change your voter registration to vote in this year’s UH Mayoral Election.

BUT–you must act quickly because the October 5th deadline is quickly approaching. Fill out a registration form, available in the Office of Student Activities, and encourage your friends to do the same.

Remember-Carroll Counts!!

Maura

Chief Peppard @ Senate

September 16, 2009

Today, the Student Union Senate was pleased to welcome Chief Peppard to our meeting. Chief Peppard is the head of the Campus Safety Services and he joined us to discuss safety concerns following the robbery incident on campus over the Labor Day weekend. The Chief reinforced that fact that such incidents on campus are extremely isolated and rare. As a result, the CSS officers take it very personally when something such as this does occur–they pride themselves on the safety of our campus and maintaining the reputation as such.

Other concerns voiced by the SU Senators as well as the students-at-large attending the meeting, included why a text message alert was not sent (this method is reserved for catastrophic situations) and if anything would be done differently if something like this were to happen again (conversations have and will continue to take place regarding the decisions made).

Finally, the issue of arming our CSS officers was brought before the Chief. He said his plan since he arrived at JCU has been to be prepared to arm the officers should the University decide to move in that direction. As of right now, more than half of the CSS officers are sworn police officers and within the next few years, all of them will be sworn police officers. If the decision is made by the University to arm the officers, they are prepared.

We appreciate the time Chief Peppard spent with us today. Remain alert, program CSS’s number in your cell phone (216-397-1234 or 216-397-4600), and walk with friends.

Maura

Chief Peppard

September 14, 2009

Just a quick note to let you know that Chief Peppard will be joining the Student Union Senate for our meeting at 5 pm in the Jardine Room tomorrow (Tuesday, September 15). I encourage all of you to attend and bring your concerns directly to him.

With love for JCU,
Maura

Concerned Students

September 9, 2009

I hope you all enjoyed the three day weekend! I know I found it a welcome break after a week of adjusting to a busy schedule again.

As most of you know, there was an incident of assault and robbery on campus Sunday evening. The campus was alerted promptly and given the details that were available. Although such incidents are unusual on campus, students have definitely voiced their concerns–any incident is one too many. These concerns were brought before the Senate at Tuesday’s meeting. Security phones as well as the increased presence of CSS officers were measures discussed by those present at the meeting. As a result of our discussion last evening, we are in the process of scheduling a date for Chief Peppard to come and speak with the Senate. When this date is available I will be sure you are informed–as always I encourage you to attend this meeting.

In the meantime, walk with a friend, take advantage of the 24 hour CSS escort service, and program the number for CSS into your phone (either 216-397-4600 or 216-397-1234).

With love for JCU,
Maura

The First Senate Meeting of Fall 2009

September 4, 2009

At 5 o’clock on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 the John Carroll Student Union Senate held our first meeting of the Fall 2009 Semester. The Class Presidents brought everyone up-to-date on plans for their respective classes. Senator Mahoney announced that current plans for Senior Week include the Goodtime boat trip. Senator Neuhaus reported that last semester ended well with a cookout on the Ham-Cam quad and Senator Kirwin announced plans to help promote the Carroll Counts Campaign to encourage students to vote in the UH mayoral election.

The Class Boards and Advocacy Committees are working on goals for the semester. Once we have those finalized, I will make sure they are posted on our website–be sure to check it out in the coming weeks!

Also, beginning next week your senators will be sitting their weekly office hour in the Student Union Office. The schedule will be posted next Tuesday evening under the Upcoming Events tab. Be sure to stop in to voice your questions, concerns, and ideas!

With love for JCU,
Maura
